Box Score TROY, NY (October 25, 2014) – Senior captain Taylor Korytko scored the eventual game-winning goal in the seventh minute to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Vassar College at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 11-5-1 overall (5-2 LL), while the Brewers drop to 8-5-2 (2-2-2 LL).
Rensselaer capitalized on an early set piece, which was sent into the penalty area by junior center back Shelby Stromerson. Senior captain Dana Sailor deflected the service to Korytko, who tapped home her team-leading eighth goal of the season from inside the Vassar six.
Junior Kate Edwards (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) gave the hosts 2-0 cushion in the 39th minute, finishing off a low cross from the left by freshman Dali Alarian. Freshman Stephanie May sent a ball up the left wing for Alarian, who drove across the box for Edwards to finish.
The Engineers held a 7-2 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks after 45 minutes of play.
Sophomore Cori Winslow capped the scoring in the 78th minute, creating a goal out of nothing in the offensive third. After stripping a Brewers defender of the ball, she dribbled up the left side, before getting a shot away that was blocked. Senior Sam Lamorte pushed a pass back towards Winslow, who ripped a shot into the top of the net.
Junior goalkeeper
Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) finished with four saves in the game.
The victory clinches a second place finish in the Liberty League for the Engineers, who will host a semifinal in the Liberty League Tournament.
Vassar will now vie for one of the final two spots in the conference playoffs. VC will have an opportunity to rebound this Tuesday when the team hosts Bard College at Gordon Field.
