Brewers Split Liberty League Volleyball Doubleheader Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROCHESTER, NY (October 18, 2014) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team finished its 2014 Liberty League slate Saturday afternoon, knocking off Bard College 3-0 before dropping a 3-0 decision to Union College in the final game of the weekend.

Vassar College (12-16, 4-8 Liberty League) defeated the Raptors with scores of 25-10, 25-21 and 25-20, but couldn't keep the momentum going with a 25-22, 25-13, 25-22 loss to Union College. The Brewers 4-8 conference record in 2014 is the first time since 2008 that VC has finished below .500 in league play.

Vassar 3, Bard 0
Vassar College had no problems dispatching of the Raptors (3-27, 0-11 Liberty) on Saturday, as the Brewers upped their record to 18-0 all-time against Bard. Vassar opened the first set by building a 12-4 lead, and after Bard trimmed the lead to 16-10, VC rattled off the final nine points of the set to take a 1-0 match lead.

The second set saw the Raptors take a 9-5 advantage, but Vassar battled back to tie the match at 19. Vassar tallied six of the final eight points contested to take the second set, as the Brewers held BC to just three kills in the second stanza. In the final set, Vassar again was solid defensively, forcing Bard into .029 hitting as the Brewers earned the match victory.

Senior Taylor Mosley (Rowlett, TX/Parish Episcopal School) chalked up a game-high 12 kills to go with eight digs, as she hit a team-leading .450 for the match. Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) also tallied 11 kills and six digs, and senior Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucy's Priory) did some setting against Bard due to injuries and dished out a match-best 27 assists.

Junior libero Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) posted 10 digs, which led the Brewers. Vassar finished with a .186 hitting percentage on the match, and posted six service aces, with sophomore Sierra Tobin (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) and Paige Benson (Elk Grove, CA/Bradshaw Christian School) each registering two apiece.

Union 3, Vassar 0
The Brewers did their best to keep things going in the second match of the afternoon, but ended up falling in three to Union. The loss eliminated the Brewers from playoff contention officially, as Union earned its fifth win of the year.

In the opening set, Vassar battled back from four-point deficits, and took a 16-15 lead as well. Union rallied with four consecutive, and though VC battled back to make the score 24-22, the Dutchwomen earned the final point.

The Dutchwomen (20-8, 5-3 Liberty) held the Brewers to negative hitting in the second set to earn a 2-0 lead in the match. In the final game, VC fell behind by eight at 19-11, but fought back to make the score 22-20. Vassar would twice make it a two-point game, but in the end Union was too much in taking the victory.

The offensive output was spread out fairly well for Vassar, as Mosley and Cardillo each had eight kills apiece. Freshman Paige Lerman (San Rafael, CA/Jewish Comm. Of The Bay) tallied seven kills, while Hallum had a team-best 15 digs. Hallum now sits 31 digs short of the No. 2 position all-time in digs at Vassar, as she chases Kathleen Landry and her 1,507.

Pitre finished with 23 assists, while Sarah Roberts (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber) had a team-leading three total blocks against Union. VC hit .104 for the night, and finished with five total blocks and 50 digs. The Brewers only posted three aces on the match, two coming from Pitre.
