Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 18, 2014) – With a little over six minutes left in regulation, junior
Lucy Brainerd (Littleton, CO/Heritage) scored the game-winning goal off a free kick to power Vassar to a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence Saturday afternoon. On an emotional day where VC women's soccer honored its four seniors for senior day, the Brewers were able to pull out a last minute victory to remain unbeaten at home and move into third place in the Liberty League. Vassar moves to 7-4-2 on the season and 2-1-2 in conference with the victory, while St. Lawrence drops to 9-5-1 (2-1-2 LL) on the year.
It appeared as though neither side would find the game's first goal, as both teams' defenses didn't allow much production on the offensive end. It wasn't until the 84
th minute when the Brewers were finally able to break through, after freshman
Jessica Schwed (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) played a free kick into the box. A one-time pass from fellow freshman
Katie Voegtlin (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock) found Brainerd towards the top left of the box, and her shot slipped past the keeper in the right corner.
Both sides felt each other out in the opening half, and chances were few and far between with the teams combing to take only five shots. Junior goalkeeper
Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) made four saves in the victory to earn her second consecutive shutout.
Seniors
Sarah Bourenane (Carrollton, TX/Hebron),
Kim Kogler (Colorado Springs, CO/Pine Creek),
Lily Lanier (Brookline, MA) and
Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) were all honored before the game playing in their final weekend match at Gordon Field.
The Brewers will look to carry today's momentum into Wednesday, when the team hosts William Patterson University at home to wrap up non-conference competition.
