Brewers Draw No. 13 St. Lawrence 1-1 in 2OT

Box Score

CANTON, NY (October 18, 2014) – The Vassar men's soccer team ended their two-day Liberty League road trip on a positive note, tying the No. 13 team in the country St. Lawrence 1-1 on the road in double overtime. Freshman Alex Gonzales (Aliso Viejo, CA/Mater Dei) scored his first goal as a Brewer on the big stage, putting VC up 1-0 in the first half before the Saints found the equalizer in the second. The draw moves Vassar to 9-4-2 on the year and 3-1-1 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence now stands 12-2-1 (5-0-1 LL) on the season.

Despite playing defensively for most of the game, Vassar did find itself with a 1-0 lead thanks to a counter strike from Gonzales in the 28th minute. The Brewers rushed the ball up the field as the Saints did not apply pressure, and junior Ben Glasner (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O Dickerson) fed a perfect cross to Gonzales.  The freshman then settled the ball and fired a strike into the lower corner past St. Lawrence keeper Sean Houston for his first goal of the season.

Playing from behind, St. Lawrence had nearly every offensive chance, firing crosses through the box but was unable to connect for a true scoring bid, while Vassar's defense did well to keep sophomore goalkeeper Adam Warner (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) protected.

Playing direct as the clock wound down, St. Lawrence's Dan Hunt collected the ball and attacked from the left.  His cross was perfectly-set for sophomore Rob Brandell, who headed the ball past Warner into the lower-right portion of the net for the equalizer with just 9:23 to play in regulation.

St. Lawrence had the momentum in overtime, outshooting VC 8-2 while creating a handful of close chances. The Vassar defense held firm, and in the end the Brewers escaped with a draw and crucial point to remain in the No. 3 spot in Liberty League standings.

The tie marked the end of a nine-game win streak for the Saints, who last lost a game on September 13.

The Brewers will return to action on Saturday, October 25 at 2:00 pm to face RPI at Gordon Field for senior day. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
