Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 17, 2014) – Senior
Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) scored eight minutes into the game, as Vassar went on to earn a 1-0 shutout victory over Clarkson Friday afternoon. The Vassar defense held tight throughout the contest at Gordon Field, limiting the Golden Knights to six shots with only two coming on goal. VC moves to 6-4-2 and 1-1-2 in the Liberty League with the win, while Clarkson drops to 5-8-1 (1-3-1 LL) on the year.
The first shot of the game proved to be the decisive one, as sophomore Kelsey Hamm (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) found an opening down the right wing to play a cross into the box. Wheeler found herself wide open on the left side of the goal, and headed in the cross to put her team ahead 1-0 in the eighth minute.
The Brewers had a real chance later on in the half in the 15
th minute, as a corner kick from the left side found the head of senior
Lily Lanier (Brookline, MA/Brookline) in the box. Her attempt had good pace on it, but went just wide of the goal to keep the VC lead at one.
Vassar produced another great chance in the 77
th minute, after sophomore
Rory Chipman (Alameda, CA/Head-Royce School) found an opening on the left side of the box. She powered a shot towards goal, but the ball deflected off the post and was cleared by a Clarkson defender to keep the Brewer advantage to one. The Golden Knights pressured throughout the final minutes of the half, but the Brewers kept them away fro many real chances to seal the victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Emma Nichols (Lexington, MA/Lexington) finished with two saves in 90 minutes to give the Brewers their sixth shutout of the season.
Vassar will be back in action tomorrow against St. Lawrence in other crucial Liberty League matchup. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
