Box Score POTSDAM, NY (October 17, 2014) – Clarkson scored two first half goals, while limiting Vassar to one as the Golden Knights held on to top the Brewers 2-1 Friday afternoon. Despite outshooting the hosts 14-11, VC could not find the equalizer as the team drops to 9-4-1 and 3-1 in the Liberty League. Clarkson improves to 7-7-1 and 2-3 in conference play with the victory.
The first half brought the most action in the rainy game at Hantz Turf Field, as Clarkson struck first in the 15
th minute. Junior Zachary Godin played in a free kick to the back post, which found senior Trevor Blackwell waiting to head in the score and put his team up 1-0. VC found the answer in the 32nd minute, as junior
Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) played in a ball off a corner kick to the middle of the box. Fellow junior
Nick Hess (Troy, NY/Averill Park) put a head on the cross and powered it past the Clarkson goalie to score his second of the season and even the game 1-1.
Just three minutes before the end of the half, senior Maximillian Leetz chipped a ball over the Vassar defense to sophomore Eric Herberger, who volleyed it past a diving
Adam Warner (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) to reclaim the lead.
The teams battled hard in the second half, but neither side could come away with a score as the Brewers were outshot 6-5. The loss moves Vassar to third in the Liberty League standings, and the Brewers will need to finish strong in its final four conference matches to remain in playoff contention.
The Brewers will have a chance to get back in the win column tomorrow at 2:00 pm when the team travels to face St. Lawrence.
