POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 13, 2014) -
John Winton and
Louis Khourey returned to the Vassar line-up this week having missed last Saturday's at Union. The Vassar team had performed sporadically up in Schenectady but on this warm and sunny fall afternoon their play matched the colors of the autumn leaves and at times was stunning. Winton and Khourey will argue that they were the difference but given that 60% of the Vassar players scored today and neither of this dynamic duo did, there will no doubt be a debate of epic proportions at
Tuesday's practice!

Vassar College Men 89 v 3 SUNY-New PaltzTries: Jesse Myhill (2), John Loree (1), Geoff Matthes (1), Joe Simon (3), Erik Quinson (1), Seamus Taylor (2), Adam D'Agostino (1), Alex Voynow (1), Nich Graham (1).Cons: Nich Graham (12).Â
Vassar started the day at 4-0 in conference play and SUNY-New Paltz was 0-4 but one could not have expected the onslaught that followed in the next 80 minutes. It was 40-0 at the half and 89-3 by the end and while scoring 13 tries is impressive it was more the manner of the victory that told the true story.
Â
Vassar set a new school record for most points in a game (89) and equaled the school record for most tries in a game (13). Vassar captain Nich Graham set a new school record for most points scored by an individual in a game (29) connecting on 12 conversions and diving over for 1 try.
Â
Vassar came out of the blocks determined to make amends for a poor game last week and they generated quick ruck ball that kept the New Paltz defense backpedaling.
Jesse Myhill, filling in at inside center, looked sharp and sliced through for the opening try but he took a knock later in the game and had to be replaced. The forwards seemed to have gotten the message about body position in the loose and it was Vassar that dominated possession. This allowed the backs to get in on the act and 8 of the tries scored were the result.
Â
Seamus Taylor is an all-action player and he had a strong day. He never gives up and one of his scores late in the second half was a testimony to physics. A body in motion tends to stay in motion, albeit twisting, turning, spinning, tumbling, and stumbling! He had a brace and was only bettered by freshman fullback Joe Simon who collected 3 tries.
Â
The try that brought the biggest cheer of the day was when
Adam D'Agostino went over. His first Vassar "A" side try came after he had galloped a full 50 yards swerving and avoiding defenders and getting to the in-goal to score. One should add that it was when he got to the in-goal that he received the pass from Alex Voynow!
Â
Next week Vassar face cross-town rivals Marist College and they are 3-1 in conference play. The Red Foxes need to win to have a shot at a home game the following week in the Conference quarterfinals and Vassar need to win to earn the number one seed from the North Division. The Number one seed is important as it could mean a home Conference Championship game down the road so there is everything to play for in this regular season finale.
Â
The Brewers need to have a good hard week of practice and need to be prepared to face a tough opponent.
