Vassar Men's Hoops Hits Century Mark In Scoring With 100-83 Win At RPI

Box Score

TROY, NY (January 28, 2014) – It has been since November, 2011 that the Vassar College men's basketball team put up 100 points in a game (104-34 against Culinary Institute) and even longer since they have done it against a Liberty League opponent. The Brewers (14-3, 6-2) defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 100-83 Tuesday evening at the East Campus Arena.

Luka Ladan (Belmont, MA/Belmont) led another four Brewers in double-digit scoring with a career-high 26 points against the Engineers (6-11, 4-4). Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) broke the fifth-century mark with 21 points, going 4-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Johnny Mrlik (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) hit 5-of-11 three-point attempts for 17 points, Alex Snyder (Rutland, VT/Rutland) was 7-of-12 from the floor on his way to 15 points and freshman Otis Osman (Far Hills, NJ/Pingry School) added 10 from the bench, including two clutch beyond-arc shots.

The Brewers held the lead for 91.8 percent of the game after a 16-7 run that began just under two minutes into play. The spree put Vassar up 18-11 and was highlighted by Mrlik's nine points from three jumpers from three-point land, Ladan's five tallies from inside and Wasyl's two supplemental notches.

Vassar didn't see its largest lead of the game until Mrlik hit two charity shots with 3:53 left in the game for a 93-72, 21-point lead.

RPI's starters fell short of double-figure scoring. The five combined for 21 points while Josh Dugas (14), Nash Widowski (13), Jesus Cardenas (11) and Brian Hatcher (11) ended the game as the Engineers' high-scorers.

"We just did a really good job handling their pressure in the first half, while in the second half, we handled their runs and showed a lot of maturity on the court," said head coach B.J. Dunne. "We forced them to take some very difficult shots throughout the game and this win puts us in a good place for our next round of eight games."

Wasyl and Mrlik both were double-double performers on Tuesday. Wasyl added 10 assists to his 21 points while Mrlik pulled in 11 boards, all of which were defensive. RPI out-rebounded the Brewers 62-57 while Vassar held the advantage in assists 25-7.

The Brewers will next travel to Hudson Valley local, Bard College on Tuesday, February 4 for an 8:00 pm tip. RPI will host the Dutchmen of Union College on Friday, January 31 at 8:00 pm.
