VC Women’s Basketball Honors Alumni With 65-60 Win Over St. Lawrence

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 25, 2014) – On alumni weekend for the Vassar College women's basketball team, the home standing Brewer squad rallied to earn an important 65-60 victory over St. Lawrence University Saturday in Liberty League action from the Athletics and Fitness Center.

With nearly 20 alumni in attendance to watch the current group of Vassar (13-3, 6-1 Liberty League) women's ballers, the squad fell behind in the early going. St. Lawrence (8-6, 4-1 Liberty League) pushed its lead out to a game-high 10 points at the 11:59 mark of the first half as a result of a three-pointer from Caroline Dalton.

The Brewers slowly crept back into the contest, going on an 11-2 run over the next seven minutes to pull to within one after a layup from Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area). Back-to-back threes from SLU's Kara McDuffee pushed the Saint's advantage back up to seven, eventually landing at six at the half as Kelly Legg made a triple right before the buzzer.

Seniors Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy) and Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington) led the Brewers in the opening stanza with eight points apiece, while Legg paced the Saints with nine at the break.

Right after the break, St. Lawrence posted a 7-0 run to take a nine-point advantage with 16:48 on the clock. The Brewers answered with an 8-1 spurt of their own to close to within two at 39-37. St. Lawrence would continue to lead until the 3:39 point of regulation, when Nyah Berg (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) drove left and scored to tie the game at 59.

The last five minutes of the game was all about defense for the Brewers, as they forced SLU into 1-10 shooting from the floor over the end of the contest. The big blow for St. Lawrence came when McDuffee picked up her fourth foul with 6:47 left, as VC outscored the Saints 13-5 over the remainder of the game.

VC took the lead for the first time with 2:44 to play, and would hold it the rest of the way as St. Lawrence missed six three-pointers during its drought to end the contest. Senftleber had her best offensive game of the year, scoring 26 points to go with six boards and two steals to lead Vassar.

Matsuoka finished just shy of a triple-double, finishing with 21 points, a team-best 10 boards and a game-best seven helpers. It was Matsuoka's first double-digit rebounding performance of the season, and it also marked her second double-double of the year. Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) posted seven points and five boards, and Serafini came off the bench to tie for the team-high with 10 rebounds, including two huge offensive boards in the waning moments.

The Brewers fired 38.5 percent (25-65) from the field, making two of the six triples they took. Vassar did have an uncharacteristically tough time at the charity stripe, making just 61 percent (13-21) from the line. The host Brewers turned the ball over a season-low nine times Saturday, as Vassar has now won seven of its last eight games.

McDuffee finished with 13 points and a game-leading 13 boards for the Saints, who were just 8-of-28 (28.6 percent) from downtown. Legg finished with a team-leading 14 points, while Cassie St. Hilaire added 12 points and four assists.

Vassar is back in action in three days, as it will head to Troy, NY to take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening in more Liberty League play.
