POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 24, 2014) – Senior guard
Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy) led all scorers with 18 points as the Vassar College women's basketball team cruised to a 67-50 win over visiting Clarkson University in Liberty League action Friday evening.
The contest was close in the early going, as the Golden Knights (6-7, 1-4 Liberty League) held a pair of leads during the first three minutes of the game. With the game knotted at 14, the Brewers rattled off a 13-2 run that put Vassar (11-3, 4-1 Liberty) up 27-16 with 7:11 remaining in the opening stanza.
CU trimmed the lead down to seven with 3:39 left in the half, but the Brewers pushed their advantage back up to 11 at the break with a score of 41-30. Matsuoka chalked up 13 of her 18 points in the first half, while the Golden Knights were paced by the 12 points from Cara Manfredi.
After the intermission break, the Brewer's lead never fell below 12 points, with Vassar leading by as much as 23 points with 4:34 to play after a pair of free throws by sophomore center
Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton Area). Clarkson ended the game on a 9-2 run, but it was too little, too late for the visitors.
Senior
Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington) posted 10 points and 10 rebounds, chalking up her fifth double-double of the season. Junior
Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) continued her fine play of late, finishing with 11 points, six boards and three steals, while junior
Nyah Berg (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) added 10 points off the bench.
Sophomore guard
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) struggled from the floor shooting just 4-of-13, but made up for it with eight rebounds. Serafini added seven rebounds as well for VC, who made 41.9 percent (26-62) from the floor Friday evening. Matsuoka led all players with six helpers.
Clarkson was spearheaded by the 15 points from Manfredi, though the guard was just 4-of-11 from the floor. Ashley Loggins chalked up a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Brooke Butkovsky and Isabella Esposito each added six points apiece for the Golden Knights. CU shot just 33.9 percent (19-56) from the floor, as it got out-boarded by the Brewers 45-31.
VC is back in action tomorrow evening, as the Saints of St. Lawrence University come to Poughkeepsie, NY for another Liberty League contest at 2 p.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center. Clarkson will head north to take on Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY at the same time.
