Men's Swimming And Diving Heads To Montclair; Both Men And Women Host NYU Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 22, 2014) – The Vassar College men's swimming and diving teams will face Montclair State University tonight in Montclair, NJ. Saturday will mark senior day for the Brewers, with both the men's and women's teams facing off at home against New York University.

What to Look For
Men: The Brewers competed in dual meet action that finished with a loss of 150-77 on the road at Trinity College on Tuesday evening.

Junior Luc Amodio (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) led the Brewers by teaming with Matt Weiss (Florence, MA/Northamton), freshman Anthony Walker (Madison, WI/James Madison Memorial) and sophomore Greg Cristina (Suffield, CT/Suffield) for a second place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay (1:40.10). Amodio won the 200 Yard IM (2:06.59) and the 100 Yard Backstroke (55.31). His 200 time was a season best. Also winning an individual event was Walker in the 100 Yard Butterfly (53.69).

Sophomore Isaiah Hale (Dansville, NY/Dansville) out-touched Trinity's Alex Zhang in the 500 Yard Freestyle by 1.43 seconds for a second place finish (5:24.30).

Senior diver John Nguyen (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) took both second places in the diving events with a score of 151.19 on the 3 Meter and a final of 146.70 on the short board.

Women: The Brewers bested two other schools for a third place finish in the Seven Sister Championships hosted at Vassar College. Vassar topped Smith College and Bryn Mawr College.

Freshman Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) broke her own 200 Yard Butterfly record. Her previous record stood at 2:06.56 but her winning time of 2:06.44 replaces it.

The Brewers took fourth and fifth place in the day's final event, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The 'A' team of Cunningham, McKenzie Quinn (Upper Montclair, NJ/Immaculate Heart), Elizabeth Balter (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) and Lily Frye (Fairport, NY/Harley School) swam a 3:50.97. The 'B' team of Milee Nelson (Champaign, IL/University Laboratory), Marie Schmidt (Homer, AK/Homer), Olivia Harries (Temple Terrace, FL/Lee Academy) and Robin Lam (Arcadia, CA/Arcadia) were in close pursuit with a 3:54.09 finish.

A Look at the Red Hawks
The Montclair State men's team is coming off a 120-85 dual meet victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology on January 20. Senior Joseph Berry won the 200 Yard Individual Medley and the 100 Yard Butterfly, while fellow senior Michael Smith likewise contributed two wins, taking first in the 200 Yard Freestyle and 500 Yard Freestyle. In all, Red Hawks athletes placed first in eight events, including the 1,000 Yard Freestyle, which was won by freshman Nick Kalafatis in a time of 10:04.73. 

A Look at the Violets
Men: The Violets defeated Springfield College 187.5-76.5 in a home dual meet on January 18. NYU was particularly strong in the 1,000 Free, where the Violets' freshmen swept the top four spots, with Ryan Yue winning in 9:53.53. NYU was similarly bolstered by standout freshmen in the 200 Yard Freestyle and 200 Yard Butterfly, which were won by Max Phillips and Jason Bo, respectively. 

Women: NYU claimed a win at home against Springfield College, 164-136, on January 18. As on the men's side, a number of freshmen turned in winning performances for the Violets. Freshman Lindsey Giostra won the 200 Yard Butterfly, diver Ashlie Pankonin won the 1 Meter event, and Joanna Kostin won the 1000 Yard Freestyle. They were joined on the podium by freshman Michelle Kierencew, who placed first in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:14.04.
