Box Score 2 POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 7, 2013) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team finished play at the very competitive Vassar Invitational Saturday, picking up a win over No. 24 SUNY Cortland in four games before ending the tournament with a four-set loss to New York University.
In the opening contest of the day, the Brewers earned the win over the ranked Red Dragons with scores of 23-25, 25-19, 25-9 and 25-16. In the opening set, Cortland led 17-13, but a 5-0 run by Vassar (4-2) allowed the Brew to take a 19-18 lead. The Red Dragons would respond with a run of their own, capturing the first game 25-23.
VC would even the match at one in the second set, using an 8-1 spurt late in the game to earn a 25-19 win. The third set would be all Brewers, as VC hit at a .500 clip in the contest and held Cortland to only nine points in taking a 2-1 match lead. In the final game of the match and with the score 8-6, Vassar rattled off six straight tallies to take a commanding lead, rolling to the victory.
Junior hitter
Taylor Mosley (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School) posted a game-high 13 kills while adding 11 digs, and junior
Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucys Priory) registered 10 kills, four digs, two aces and three assisted blocks. Freshman
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) rattled off nine kills, and
Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) and
Jessie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) each had seven kills apiece.
Senior setter
Rose Carman (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) had a stellar game with a career-high 38 assists in addition to nine digs, and
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) chalked up her third straight 20-plus dig match with 23 defensive saves. Senior
Megan Andersen (Santa Monica, CA/The Archer School) did her part in the back row, posting four aces and nine digs.
Against New York University, Vassar would take the first set 25-23, rallying with the game's last three points, highlighted by a game-clinching kill from Cardillo. The Violets (6-1) earned the second set 25-14, as Alexandra Mao posted four kills to lead NYU. The all-important third set went the way of NYU, as the Violets erased a 21-16 Brewer lead late to earn the set 26-24. In the fourth set, Mao powered down five kills to help NYU take the match with a 25-22 set victory.
Pitre finished with her third double-digit kill in the last four matches, chalking up a season-high 12 kills to lead the Brewers. Mosley had 10 kills and a career-high 20 digs in the match, and Miller posted seven kills, 12 digs and three total blocks. Carman posted her fourth straight match with 30 or more helpers thanks to her 32 assists, and Hallum added 20 digs for the Brewers. Hallum was named All-Tournament Team after posting 93 assists in the four contests for the Brewers.
Vassar College will now look forward to hosting the Ephs of Williams College Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in Kenyon Hall.
