Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker, 3-2 To Smith In Betty Richey Championship

    POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 7, 2013) – Despite two first half goals, the Vassar College field hockey team fell, 3-2 in overtime to this year's Betty Richey Tournament Champions, Smith College, Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

    Smith's Allie Stein broke through defenders and scored with under five seconds remaining in the second half, sending the championship game into overtime. Stein struck again off a pass from Jenny Estes 45 seconds into the golden-goal period, securing the game for the Pioneers.

    The first half was the most promising for the Brewers when sophomore Lauren Wiebe scored her second goal of the season and tied the game, 1-1 in the fifth minute off a perfect pass from sophomore Bianca Zarrella.

    Kristen Estes got the early Smith lead off an assist from Stein in the second minute of play.

    Senior Caroline Stanton upped the Brewer score, 2-1 in the 18th minute when she drove through defenders and ricocheted a shot off the Pioneer keeper, Abbey Petronzio's leg.

    The Brewers, statistically, dominated the game in shots and corners. Vassar outshot Smith, 25-8 and went off on 12 corners to Smith's six. Vassar senior Anna Schroeder recorded nine shots for the Brewers while Stein led Smith with five.

    Vassar (2-1) will next travel to Union, NJ to face Kean University at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, September 10. Smith (3-0) will next host Daniel Webster College on Thursday, September 12 at 4:30 pm.

    In earlier action of the tournament, Manhattanville College claimed its third place after defeating Bay Path College, 12-0. Vassar claimed second place.
