POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 28, 2013) – The Vassar College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 Liberty League standstill against Skidmore College Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.
Junior Tom Wiechert (Dana Point, CA/San Clemente) scored Vassar's lone goal at 7:35 when senior Rob Manukyan chipped a pass from about the 35-yard mark through two Thoroughbred defenders to the sprinting Wiechert.
Wiechert kept the pedal to the metal as he droved the ball beyond the defense line and engaged Skidmore keeper, Eli Kisselbach in a one-on-one situation. Kisselbach approached Wiechert but Wiechert's shot went left and hit the side of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Skidmore and Vassar then went into a physical back-and-forth struggle where neither team gained much ground. It wasn't until 65:26 when Thoroughbred forward Adam Beek broke through the Brewer defense, tying the game, 1-1 after his shot found the back left corner.
As like most of the game, the overtime periods saw neither team dominating the offensive side of things. That was until sophomore Cosmo Veneziale (Garden City, NY/Garden City) rocked a 25-yard plus shot that was about five inches from finding the top right corner of the net in the second overtime.
Kisselbach recorded four saves off of Vassar's 19 shots. Senior Ryan Grimme (Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln) had five saves from Skidmore's 27 shots. The two teams were almost equal in fouls with the Brewers committing 16 to the Thoroughbreds' 14.
The Brewers (5-3-2, 0-0-1) will next travel to Geneva, NY to face Hobart College at 4:00 pm on Friday, October 4. The Thoroughbreds (5-3-2, 0-1-1) will next host Southern Vermont College at 4:00 pm on October 1.
