POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 25, 2013) – The Vassar College men's soccer team took Kean College to overtime due to some fierce scoring in the final 10 minutes of play but fell in extra minutes, 3-2 Wednesday evening at Gordon Field.
Junior Tom Wiechert scored both of Vassar's goals while Akwasi Adu got Kean's first goal and its winning goal.
Wiechert got the early goal at 6:17 when sophomore Nick Page crossed a pass from in front of the left post to the right where Wiechert tipped it in. The game remained at the 1-0 Vassar margin until late in the second half.
Adu chipped a loose ball over senior goalkeeper Ryan Grimme and tied the game, 1-1 at 83:17. Wiechert responded with the Brewer's second goal for their second lead of the game at 87:33 with the assist going to senior Adrien Demelier.
Kean's Gordon Lyng rocked a header off the corner kick from Kevin Olaya at 88:51 and secured the guarantee of going to the golden-goal period of play. The Brewers had one more push at 89:19 when sophomore Cosmo Veneziale took a shot at the Brad Watkins-defended goal. Watkins made the save and time went out in regulation.
Adu's second goal occurred just 13 seconds into overtime when the Brewer defense and Grimme had a miscommunication of coverage, allowing Adu to chip in his fifth goal of the season on an open net.
Grimme had eight saves on the day for Vassar while Watkins recorded seven. The Cougars outshot Vassar 23-16 and had two more on goal than the Brewers. Both teams fouled almost equally, 12-11 Kean. Kean had seven corner kicks to Vassar's six.
The Brewers (5-3-1) will next open Liberty League play on Saturday, September 28 at 2:00 pm against Skidmore College. The Cougars (8-2-0) will next host Rutgers-Camden in NJAC play on the 28th as well at 1:00 pm.
