POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 18, 2013) – Senior midfielder Tina Caso (Carmel, NY/Carmel) scored two second-half goals in helping lead the Vassar College field hockey to a 3-1, non-conference victory over Western Connecticut State University Wednesday evening from Weinberg Field.

The first half was played mostly in the midfield, as both teams battled for control of play. The Brewers (3-2) had the best flurry of the early going, as Enya Cunningham (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) and Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) each had good chances off of a penalty corner three minutes in.

In the 20th minute, freshman Lauren Shumate (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) had a scoring chance off a corner but her attempt was deflected wide. Minutes later, the Colonials (2-3) had their first opportunity to net a goal, but senior Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N) denied Morgan O'Dell of a goal.

The first period saw both teams finish with three shots apiece, with both keepers making one save in the frame. After intermission, the game began to open up for both sides. Wiebe would put the Brewers on top seven minutes into the second half, as she fired in a Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) entry from 20 yards out into a wide open net after the WCSU keeper missed the clearing attempt.

Western Connecticut State would not go away, scoring off of a penalty corner just 2:03 later, with Lauren Allen getting credit for the goal with help from Kristy Metasavage and Kim Gigante. The next 16 minutes were widely contested on both sides, as neither team could get much offense going.

The entry of Kerrin Poole (Scituate, MA/Thayer Academy) 49:40 into the game helped give Vassar a lift, as the normal starter fought through a sickness to tilt the possession to the favor of the hosts. With less than 10 minutes to play, Vassar College got the eventual game winner from Caso.

With 9:34 remaining in the contest, Poole restarted off of a foul and she found Zarrella. The sophomore middle sent the ball into the circle, where it bounced off of a Colonial defender. Caso was there after the referees played the advantage, and tucked her shot just inside the right post to give VC a 2-1 lead. The goal was Caso's second of the year.

The hosts would continue to pressure, and minutes later would post a big insurance goal with just over six minutes to play. Senior Rachel Waldman (New Milford, CT/New Milford) won the ball, and sent it into the circle to freshman Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Latham). Beach tipped the pass to Caso, who again beat WCSU keeper Kristy Trotty to her left to seal the win.

The Brewers outshot West Conn. 10-4 on the evening, also edging the Colonials in the penalty corner column, 6-4. Caso netted two goals on her only two shots, with Wiebe, Cunningham and Shumate also taking a pair of attempts. Caso moved into a tie for 10th all-time in career points with 30, knotting herself with current teammate Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga).

The Brewers will now start a five-game road stretch, starting with a non-conference game in Chicopee, MA Saturday at 11 a.m. against the Blazers of Elms College.
