Brewer Women's Volleyball Posts Runner-Up Finish at Garnet Classic

SWARTHMORE, PA – Vassar College earned a hard fought, four-set victory over host Swarthmore College Sunday morning, catapulting the Brewers into the Garnet Classic title contest with Stevenson University. VC would fall in the championship game to Stevenson 3-0, giving the Brewers a 2-2 record on the weekend.

In the opening contest of the day, the Brewers had to play a little catch up, rallying from down a set to earn a win with scores of 11-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-23. In the first set, Swarthmore (8-3) hit at a dizzying .414 percentage to pick up the early match lead. The Brewers responded by evening the match at one, fighting off a late rally to earn a 25-23 win.

In the third set, the game was extremely close, featuring nine times that the set was tied. With the score at 23, Vassar sealed the win after an attack error by SC and a kill by Taylor Mosley (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School). The final period was equally as close, but a pair of late kills by Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) helped lift VC to the win.

Mosley was stellar for the Brewers, as she posted a career-high 22 kills to go with 12 digs and two assisted blocks. Mosley's previous career high was 19, accomplished last year against St. Lawrence. Jessie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) registered 14 kills, and Cardillo ended the match with 13 kills and three total blocks. Senior setter Rose Carman (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) had a career-best 53 assists, and sophomore Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) dug up 24 Garnet attacks.

In the championship of the tournament, Stevenson (14-0) competed the Classic with a perfect 4-0 record in the three-set win with scores of 25-17, 25-10 and 25-11. Cardillo and freshman Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) posted team-highs of six kills each, while Miller finished with 14 digs and six total blocks

Hallum's streak of games with 20 or more digs came to an end, though the standout sophomore libero added a team-best 15 against the Mustangs. Mosley finished with 10 digs in the second match of the afternoon, and Sarah Roberts (Port Washington, NY/ P.D. Schreiber) had six total rejections. Vassar had 11 total blocks, but hit just .037 over the match. Cardillo and Mosley were honored after the match with All-Classic Team selections.

The Brewers (6-5) now will turn their attention to Liberty League play, traveling to Annadale-On-Hudson, NY Wednesday at 7 p.m. to battle the Raptors of Bard College.
