Wheeler Breaks School Record In 1-0 Win Over Plattsburgh

Wheeler had seven game-winners coming into the year.

    POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 15, 2013) – Junior forward Chloe Wheeler earned her spot in the Vassar history books today with her game-winning goal in the Vassar College women's soccer 1-0 win over Plattsburgh State Sunday afternoon at Gordon Field.

    Wheeler's goal makes her No. 1 in Vassar women's soccer history in career game-winners. Today's goal was her ninth. The Brewers solo goal came when freshman midfielder Kelsey Hamm sent a cross pass from 25 yards out to the inside left post where Wheeler headed it into the goal at 9:07.

    Sophomore midfielder Lucy Brainerd managed to find openings in the Plattsburgh defense for two close shots on goal. Hamm and Wheeler both were able to fire four shots for the day along with junior midfielder Sarah Bourenane.

    Sophomore keeper Emma Nichols picked up her third win of the season with one save. Freshman Stephanie Tapolsky came in at the start of the second half, recording two saves. The Cardinals' keeper Charisse Abellard had five saves.

    Vassar dominated Plattsburgh offensively having been able to let loose 21 shots compared to Plattsburgh's eight. The Cardinals out-fouled the Brewers 19-13.

    The Brewers (3-2-1) will next begin their three game road streak with Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday, September 18 at 7:00 pm in Danbury, CT. The Cardinals (1-4-1) will next host Skidmore College on Saturday, September 21 at 1:00 pm.
