Late Manukyan Goal Holds Oneonta To A 1-1 Tie In Men's Soccer

Box Score

ONEONTA, NY (September 14, 2013) – The Vassar College men's soccer team went into its second double overtime period in a row and the third time in this season as they tied with SUNY Oneonta, 1-1 on Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Soccer Field.

After a 3-2 double overtime win against Manhattanville on Wednesday, the recurrence of a second thriller from the Brewers is starting to define their never-say-quit-style of play. Oneonta led for the majority of the game when Dylan Williams got a chip pass from Jason Ruivo in the first half. Williams turned and shot for the 1-0 lead at 30:14.

With less than four minutes remaining in the second half and the Brewers still down, 1-0, junior Justin Mitchell popped a ball over the defense to the awaiting senior, Rob Manukyan. Manukyan's shot went in at 86:02.

Manukyan almost ended the game in the first period of the enforced "Golden-Goal" rule when his shot at 95:01 was saved by Red Dragon keeper, Vincent Pellegrino. Three minutes earlier, senior goalkeeper Ryan Grimme prevented the Dragon victory when he saved a shot from Justin Rivera.

In the final overtime period before the decision of a tie was labeled to the game, Ruivo was the only player to get a shot off which sailed high of the Grimme defended net.

Pellegrino recorded five saves compared to Grimme's four. Oneonta outshot Vassar, 13-8. The Brewers held the advantage on shots on goal, 6-5 while both teams were even in corner kicks. Six of Vassar's seven corners came in the second. Five of Oneonta's came in the first half.

The Brewers (4-1-1) will finally have a home game on Wednesday, September 18 at 4:00 pm when they host fellow Hudson Valley-ers Mount Saint Mary College. The Red Dragons (2-2-1) will next host Cazenovia College on Tuesday, September 17 at 4:00 pm.
