Brewer Women’s Volleyball Rallies But Can’t Make Up Two Game Deficit In Loss to Williams

Box Score                   POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 11, 2013) – Freshman Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had a huge double-double and helped her team rally, but the comeback fell short as the Vassar College women's volleyball squad fell to Williams College 3-1 in non-conference play Wednesday from Kenyon Hall.

The Ephs (4-1) were very efficient on offense all evening, finishing with 59 kills on the night and hitting .251 for the match. After WC earned the first two sets with scores of 25-17 and 25-19, the Brewers (4-3) would start to make their move. Vassar earned a 25-20 set victory in the third set, and erased an eight-point disadvantage in game four before dropping the set 27-25.

In the opening stanza, the Ephs built an early six-point edge and would extend that over the set to earn the opening lead. In the opening period, Taylor Mosely (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School) had four kills and six digs for the Brewers, while Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) also had six digs. Williams was paced by the five kills each from both Emily Doll and Tori Jasuta.

The second period was much like the first, as the visiting Ephs opened up a large advantage in cruising to the 2-0 match lead. Miller had five kills in the second period for Vassar, adding seven digs as well. WC hit at a .294 clip in the game, finishing 12 of its 34 swings. The third period was all Brewers, leading by as many as nine points at 21-12 before forcing a fourth game. Miller added five more kills in set three, and Hallum dug up six attacks.

The fourth and final set was back and forth, as the visiting Ephs led by as many as nine at 18-9. Slowly but surely, the Brewers chipped away at the WC lead before finally getting even at 22 after a kill and block by Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, WA/Bay School of San Francisco). The two teams would exchange points, but two straight big plays from the Ephs' Emily Doll sealed the win.

Miller finished with career-highs of 15 kills (15-3-33) and 21 digs, leading the Brewers in both categories Wednesday. Mosley added a double-double as well with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Cardillo posted 10 kills, three digs and two blocks.

Senior Jessie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) had eight kills, and Rose Carman (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) dished out a career-best 45 helpers. Hallum posted yet another 20-plus dig performance, chalking up an even 20 on the evening. Senior Megan Andersen (Santa Monica, CA/The Archer School) was also very strong in the back row, registering 12 digs.

The Brewers hit at a .190 clip for the evening, but averaged over .200 during the last three sets. VC out-dug Williams 83-70 on the night, and also registered six aces to just a pair of the Ephs. WC was paced offensively by the huge duo of Doll and Jasuta, as they posted 18 and 16 kills, respectively. Setter Ryan Farley had 45 assists and 11 digs, and Mandy Schott added 12 digs.

The Brewers will head back out on the road for a two-day tournament at Swarthmore College this weekend, taking on the likes of Stevenson University, Hamilton College and the hosting Garnet. Play at Swarthmore starts at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
