POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 11, 2013) – Despite a solid effort against the #22 nationally-ranked Montclair State University Red Hawks, the Vassar College women's soccer team fell, 1-0.
The Red Hawks got on the board late in the first half at 42:57 when Jessica Kiniery took a shot from 14 yards out and the Brewers' sophomore goalkeeper, Emma Nichols, saved it but lost control and dropped the ball. Melanie Greco tipped the dropped save into the back right of the net for her first goal of the season and the game-winner.
The Brewers saw multiple early opportunities to score in both halves. Senior Sheeva Seyfi had a spot on header off a corner kick from sophomore Lucy Brainerd. Her header went to the feet of Red Hawk keeper, Gina Policastro, at 18:09.
Freshman Kelsey Hamm's offensive presence was felt today as she had multiple lobbed passes that landed in front of the goal along with one shot that hit the crossbar at 10:52. Sophomore Kamaria Coley had a similar situation in the second half.
Coley broke through defenders and had Policastro on the ground after some fancy footwork to fake the keeper out. Unfortunately, her footwork also tangled her shot up, which went off the inside of the post at 55:15.
On defense, junior Lily Lanier made multiple stops and steals. She lead the back group of senior Becki Pearce-Probst, sophomore Olivia Hoch and freshman Rachel Marklyn who kept the Montclair offense to 18 shots with 13 on-net.
Vassar had 10 shots with only three on goal. The Brewers recorded six fouls while the Red Hawks only had four. Both teams took three corner kicks.
Policastro picked up her fifth win of the season (5-0) with her three saves. Nichols earned her first loss (2-1) with eight saves. Freshman Stephanie Tapolsky came in for the second half and recorded four saves.
The Brewers (2-1-1) will next host New York University on Saturday, September 14 at 1:00 pm. The Red Hawks (5-0) will next host Frostburg State also on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
