POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 30, 2013) – Junior forward Chloe Wheeler got her eighth career game-winning goal as the Vassar College women's soccer team went on to defeat neighboring Mount Saint Mary College, 4-1 Friday evening at Gordon Field.
Mount Saint Mary got the early 1-0 lead when Shanice Robe drove the ball to sophomore goalkeeper, Emma Nichols, and tipped it over to the back of the net 11 minutes into the game.
Wheeler responded when sophomore defender Olivia Hoch sailed a 35-yard pass from the right side of the pitch, in front of the keeper's box. The pass drew out the Knights' keeper, Jacquelyn Mancini, leaving Wheeler in her blind spot. Wheeler took the opportunity and drove in the tying goal in the 15th minute of play.
Wheeler got her second goal of the game just 14 minutes later when freshman midfielder Jordyn Matthews sent a long ball past the 18. Wheeler recovered the pass and hit the center of the net for the go-ahead goal.
Senior forward Gavriella Kaplan later netted her first goal of the season off a 50-yard pass from junior midfielder Kelsey Domb. Sophomore midfielder Lucy Brainerd rounded out the Brewers' scoring in the 86th minute with a direct kick from 20 yards out.
Nichols picked up her second win of her college career in goal and recorded eight saves. Mancini had four saves and three goals allowed in her first loss of the season. Abigail McQuillen came in for the final 11 minutes of the game, giving up one goal and recording one save.
Mount Saint Mary edged out Vassar in shots, 18-16, but was even in shots on goal, 9-9.
The Brewers (1-0) will head to Hoboken, NJ to face off with Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, September 7 at 11:00 am in the opening round of the Stevens Engineering Cup.
