PORTSMOUTH, RI (April 21, 2013) - Sunday at the Beast of the East Tournament is akin to the morning after the night of the living dead! Teams are very sore from the first two games and playing in a consolation bracket challenges the will power of any player. The Vassar Men had gone 1-1 the day before but Wentworth topped the group at 2-0 to advance to the championship bracket. It left the Brewers facing Central Connecticut a team with some big mobile forwards and considerable speed. All the Vassar lads fronted up and it was an absorbing contest. So they had conquered the first issue and exhibited plenty of willpower, but the problem was it was Vassar playing defense for the first half and then some with little possession to pressure Central.
Vassar College Men 5 v 19 Central Connecticut Men
Tries: Akeel St, Vil (1).
To be brutally honest Central probably should have won this game by 40 points had they understood the merits of getting over the gain line. But a combination of staunch Vassar tackling, optimistic offloads, and playing from a long way behind the gain line allowed the Brewers some hope.
But Vassar would live off a tiny amount of ball as the scrum was going backwards at a rate of knots, the lineouts were under pressure, and Central outweighed Vassar by 50 lbs a player at every position!
Central scored first to lead 7-0 as their forwards picked and drove smashing back the defenders. At the half it was 7-0 and the Brewers regrouped with a view to getting back in to game. The second half began well as the mistakes and deep play of Central began to give Vassar some hope. Vassar went through the phases and came close to scoring but was just held up.
Then, following that 10 minute period of sustained Vassar pressure Central added a second try to go up 12-0 as again Vassar fell off a couple of tackles. It was scant reward for the Brewers for all their efforts and Central added another converted try to seal the win.
