Men's Tennis Brings Two Wins Home After California Trip; Finishes 2-1

PASADENA, CA/THOUSAND OAKS, CA (March 12-16, 2013) – The Vassar College men's tennis team return home with two wins and a loss from their annual California Spring Break Trip. The Brewers defeated Caltech, 8-1 on March 12 and Sewanee: The University of the South, 6-3 on March 13 while falling, 6-3 to #6 nationally ranked Cal Lutheran.

Freshman Christian Phelps went 3-0 in singles and picked up another two wins in doubles this past week. Senior Josh Kessler was perfect in singles, going 2-0 and added one doubles win.

The Brewers improve to 5-8 on the season and will next face #19 nationally ranked and #1 ranked in the Northeast Region, Amherst College on Saturday, March 30 at 3:00 pm in Amherst, MA.

Phelps's biggest highlight came against Cal Lutheran when he went the distance against Devon Belcher at the No. 5 spot, picking up a 6-7(0-6), 6-4, 10-4 win. The other Brewer wins during that match came from freshman Daniel Cooper against Thomas Millet at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3)) and Kessler (4-6, 6-2, 7-5) against Nick Jacobs at the No. 6 spot.

Senior Andrew Guzick also had two singles wins and two doubles victories. Guzick paired with Cooper for an 8-5 win over Rand Jackson and Sean Laughlin of Sewanee and an 8-1 win over Caltech's Devashish Joshi and Luka Mernik.
