Women's Basketball Heads To RPI For Tuesday Night Contest

The Brewers are riding a three-game league winning streak.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 4, 2013) – The Vassar College women's basketball team looks to build on its three-game Liberty League winning streak with a road contest against Rensselaer on Tuesday night in Troy, NY. The Brewers (16-4, 8-3) are coming off victories over Clarkson and St. Lawrence this past Friday and Saturday.

Series Record: RPI holds a 25-8 record in the series. The Brewers last defeated RPI 69-64 on January 15 in Poughkeepsie. Prior to that victory, Vassar's victory came in the semi-finals of the Liberty League Championship on February 22, 2012, 56-51. Vassar Women's Notes (16-4, 8-3): The Brewers are coming off three straight Liberty League victories last week, defeating Bard (71-46), Clarkson (81-50) and St. Lawrence (79-54) in perhaps the most impressive three-game stretch of the season. The Brewers are currently in third place in the Liberty League standings behind Skidmore (9-3) and St. Lawrence (9-2). William Smith sits in fourth place at 7-4.

Inside the numbers:  On Monday, sophomore forward Colleen O'Connell was named to the Liberty League Honor Roll for her performance last week. O'Connell averaged 16.7 ppg and 9.0 rpg. She shot 18 of 35 from the field (51 percent) and 12 of 14 from the free throw line (86 percent). Against St. Lawrence, she had 24 points and 11 rebounds on 7 of 11 shooting and made 9 of 10 free throws. O'Connell is 12th in the league in scoring (10.3 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (7.9 rpg).

Junior guard Cydni Matsuoka is third in the Liberty League in scoring (17.3 ppg), first in field goal percentage (.549), assists (5.8 apg), free throw percentage (.894), 3-point percentage (.485) and second in 3-pointers made per game (2.4). 

In the January 31 NCAA Statistics, Matsuoka ranks 12th in the nation in assists, 14th in field goal percentage, third in 3-point shooting percentage and fifth in assist to turnover ratio.

Next Up: The Brewers will host William Smith at the AFC on Friday, February 8 at 6:00 p.m.

Rensselaer Notes (11-8, 5-5):  RPI is coming off an 84-78 loss against RIT on Saturday. The Engineers had defeated William Smith 74-61 on Friday. 

Graduate student Sarah Wetmore leads the Liberty League in scoring (19.2 ppg). 

Next Up: RPI will travel to Canton, NY to face St. Lawrence University on Friday, February 8 at 6:00 pm.

Coaches: Vassar is coached by Candice Brown, who is in her fourth season. Brown has led the Brewers to back-to-back Liberty League Championships and appearances in the NCAA Division III Championships. She was the 2010-11 Liberty League Coach of the Year.

RPI is coached by John Greene in his tenth season.
