Men's Tennis To Host Nationally Ranked #22 Skidmore On Saturday

Dan Freeman and Andrew Guzick are ranked higher in the region than the Skidmore doubles teams.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 20, 2013) - The Vassar College men's tennis team will host nationally ranked No. 22 Skidmore College this Saturday in Walker Field House as both teams have establish themselves as Liberty League superpowers.

Vassar Notes: The No. 11, Northeast Regional ranked Brewers (3-4) recently suffered hard-fought 7-2 and 9-0 losses to nationally ranked No.12 North Carolina Wesleyan University and No. 17 Case Western Reserve University, respectively.  However, the team posted strong performances in these tough matches, showing promise for the upcoming season.  Senior No. 1 Andrew Guzick won his first set against nationally ranked No. 2 Robert Kjellberg of North Carolina Wesleyan 6-2, but fell in the following sets 6-3 and 7-2.  Guzick was narrowly defeated by Case Western's Will Drougas 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Guzick is ranked 17th in the region for singles and pairs with senior Dan Freeman for a fourth place ranking regionally.

Freshman Daniel Cooper earned a pair of wins against North Carolina Wesleyan: Cooper topped Peter Hviid 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 in singles and paired with senior Nick Jasso to defeat Johan Ljungdahl and Hviid 8-6. Both Cooper and Guzick swept Liberty League Weekly Honors for a second week straight.

Vassar Next Match: Vassar will travel to Cambridge, MA to face Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday, March 1 at 6:00 pm.

Skidmore Notes: The No. 22 nationally ranked Thoroughbreds (0-0) will open their spring season with this weekend's match against the Brewers. Junior Oliver Loutsenko finished his fall season with a seventh place finish at the USTA/ITA National Small College Singles Championships. Loutsenko is ranked seventh in the nation and third in the Northeast Region. Sophomore Alec Hoblitzell is ranked 25th regionally. In doubles, junior Danny Knight and Loutsenko are ranked 14th regonally. Overall, Skidmore is ranked sixth in the Northeast Region.

Skidmore Next Match: The Thoroughbreds will return home to host New York University at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 2.
