NEW LONDON, CT (December 10, 2013) – A huge 68% shooting second half lifted the Vassar College men's basketball team over Connecticut College, 84-68 for a big non-conference win Tuesday evening at Luce Field House.
Vassar dropped in 17-of-25 from the floor in the second half, led by sophomore guard
Johnny Mrlik's (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) 5-for-6 from the free throw line and 12 point performance. Mrlik totaled a team-high 21 points and nine rebounds.
The Brewers came out of halftime with a back-and-forth struggle after being down 38-36 and took the lead off a Mrlik 3-pointer at 15:06, 47-46. Vassar's largest run came with eight minutes remaining when Mrlik hit a layup, making the score 58-57 and ending after a 3-pointer from junior guard
Curtis Smith (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor) to complete a 14-3 run.
The Brewers' largest lead was held at 1:32 after sophomore guard
Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Durham) nailed a pair of free throws, 81-64.
Mrlik's 21 points led three other Brewers into double figures. Junior forward
Luka Ladan (Belmont, MA/Belmont) hit for 17 points, Wasyl drained 15 and senior forward
Evan Carberry scored 10. Junior forward
Alex Snyder had a career-high and game-high 10 assists.
The Camels were led by Matt Vadas who had a game-high 32 points, going 5-for-12 from the 3-point arc, 7-for-9 from the charity line and 10-of-20 overall. Zuri Pavlin was the only other Conn. College player who hit double figure scoring. Colin Pascoe led the Camels with seven boards.
The Brewers totaled a 34-27 rebound advantage and finished the game shooting 62% from the field and 40.9% from 3-point land.
The Brewers (5-1) will next face off with Wentworth Institute of Technology on Monday, December 30 at 7:00 pm during the Trinity College Tournament. The Camels (4-4) will next travel to face Methodist University on December 30 at 4:00 pm.
