GENEVA, NY (November 6, 2013) – The nationally ranked #3 William Smith College Herons put up a 3-0 win over the Vassar College women's soccer team Wednesday afternoon at Cozzens Field in the opening round of the Liberty League playoffs.
Freshman Stephanie Tapolsky (Louisville, KY/Dupont Manual) recorded nine saves in goal as William Smith outshot Vassar, 30-5, including a 12-3 shots on goal edge. Herons' Chelsea Dunay recorded three saves and her 12th shutout, as the win was also William Smith's 16th straight victory and ninth consecutive clean sheet.
Vassar's best opportunity to get a goal in the first half came from sophomore Lucy Brainerd (Littleton, CO/Heritage). Brainerd blasted a shot on goal just inside the right post after a Brewer corner kick, but was stopped by Dunay in the 11th minute of play.
The game had remained scoreless despite the offensive pressure and the solid defense by the Herons until 37:31. Madeline Buckley scored first for the Herons when she lined a shot from the top right corner of the 18-yard line off an Emma Diehl corner kick.
Just minutes later at 42:59, Shay Callahan took a pass from MacKenzie Smith for a one-on-one situation with Tapolsky. Callahan's shot went just passed the Brewer keeper for the 2-0 lead.
Buckley got the assist on the Heron's final goal of the game at 58:24 when Krista Longo chipped in a shot to go up 3-0.
The Brewers finish their accomplished season with a record of 9-8-2 and 4-3-1 in the Liberty League. William Smith (16-1-0, 8-0-0 Liberty League) will next host the winner between #2 Skidmore College and #3 Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday.
