TROY, NY (November 6, 2013) – The nationally ranked #17 St. Lawrence University Saints snuck a late second-half goal in during the Liberty League Semifinals against the Vassar College men's soccer team for a 1-0 advancing win on Wednesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
Ryan Grant received a pass from Seyefe Brouk in the 78th minute of play after the ball was knocked around between Saints' attackers and Brewers' defenders. Grant pushed the ball on a one-on-one situation past senior goalkeeper Ryan Grimme (Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln) for the game-winning goal.
One of the greatest scoring chances for Vassar came on the restart of play after the Saints' goal. Sophomore Gavin Jennings (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) received a lobbed pass over defenders from one of the Brewers' midfielders for a one-on-one breakaway with St. Lawrence goalie, Aaron Costello. Costello made a forward, diving save to prevent the game-tying goal, also preserving his 15th shutout of the year.
The Brewer offense had some earlier attempts that also fell short. During the beginning of the first half, junior Tom Wiechert (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) raced pass defenders and took a chip shot that was barely deflected by Costello for a Brewer corner kick. Just minutes later, senior Rob Manukyan (Yerevan, Armenia/United Nations International School) was found wide open on a Vassar charge by freshman Noah Bloch (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park), who sent the pass to the center of the pitch but was too far ahead of the sprinting Manukyan.
St. Lawrence's offense was an ever-present threat, outshooting the Brewers 21-4. Out of their shots, the Saints only had four on goal while Vassar had two.
The Saints held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. Grimme finished the day with three saves for the Brewers while Costello had two.
The Brewers finish their season with a record of 8-5-5 overall and 3-1-4 in the Liberty League. The Saints (14-2-2, 7-1-0 Liberty League) continue in the League Championships on Saturday with their opponent yet to be determined between #2 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and #3 Skidmore College.
