What to Look For
The Brewers (2-1) are coming off a big 73-61 win over neighboring SUNY New Paltz last Thursday. The Brewers hit 13 of their 28 3-point attempts (.464 percentage) in the win. Sophomores Erikson Wasyl (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) and Johnny Mrlik (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius College Preparatory) led the Brewers from the arc. Both players hit four 3-pointers each followed by junior Curtis Smith (Mastic, NY/Eastport South Manor) who had three. Vassar's other top quality besides its 3-point shooting is its free throw shooting.
Mrlik leads the Brewers with 16-of-17 free throws made (.941). Junior Luka Ladan (Belmont, MA/Belmont) follows with 7-of-8 from the charity line (.875). Andrew Adkins (Richmond, VA/Steward School), Evan Carberry (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) and Mickey Adams (Natick, MA/St. Sebastian's School) are the only Brewers who are flawless from the line this season. Adkins is 3-for-3 and both Carberry and Adams are 2-for-2.
The Brewers did a much better job at handling the ball. During the season-opening tournament, Vassar had 28 turnovers against Clark University and 14 against Roger Williams. The Brewers cut the giveaways down to only eight against New Paltz and also posted a season-low 13 personal fouls. The Brewers will have to work harder under the net on offense, as they only pulled in seven offensive rebounds.
A Look at the Colonials
The Colonials won the Maron Hotel & Suites Classic with a 106-100 win over Mitchell College on Sunday. Six players for WestConn scored in double-digits. Jeremiah Washington led with 22 points while Luis Bridtter, Ronnie Underwood and Jengodji Gates each added 12 points. WestConn's free throw shooters went for a combined 38-of-49 from the line with 31 of the attempts occurring in the second half.
The Colonials fouled 23 times and gave the ball away 20 times. Their biggest strength in the game was under the hoop. Bridtter pulled in a game-high 15 of WestConn's 50 rebounds. The Colonials bench is also a keynote to their success on Sunday with every player scoring and only one player not pulling down a board.
Against Western Connecticut All-Time
These two teams have only met once before in 1999. The Colonials hosted the Brewers in what would turn out to be a WestConn, 78-50 win.
Thanksgiving Is Just Around The Corner…We'll Bring The Stuffing
Vassar has stuffed 15 shots this year while its opponents have only gotten hands on four. Mrlik, Wasyl, Carberry, Ladan, Atkins and Otis Osman (Far Hills, NJ/Pingry School) all have two blocks each.
Wasyl For Three!
Wasyl is third in the Liberty League for good 3-pointers with 10. He follows RIT's J.P. Reagan and Jameel Balenton.
Here's A Pointer From Mrlik:
Mrlik is fifth in the League in points with 62. He is also sixth in points per game average with 20.7. He is also averaging 8.3 rebounds a game, which is good enough for fourth in the Liberty League. Mrlik is sixth in the League with 25 total rebounds.
