Men Battle With New Paltz In Dual Meet Action And Pull Out A 144-135 Win

    POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 23, 2013) – The Vassar College men's swimming and diving team took a 144-135 win from visiting SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at Kresge Pool in a heated dual meet.

    Freshman Chris Cerutti (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) had a standout day in the pool. He teamed with Patrick Lai (Chatham, NJ/Newark Academy), Ian Quinn (Montclair, NJ/Seton Hall Preparatory) and Greg Cristina (Suffield, CT/Suffield) in the 400-Yard Medley Relay for a first place finish with a time of 3:53.25. He then picked up two individual wins in the 100-Yard (58.50) and 200-Yard Backstroke (2:06.91). His 100 finish was .31 faster than New Paltz's Matthew Distler who swam a 58.81.

    "We stepped up to many positive challenges today," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. "Our men pulled out close races and got the job done."

    Junior Luc Amodio (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) swam the faster split for the Brewers in the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay that helped secure Vassar's win. He swam a 23.85 for the first 50 yards and totaled a 50.63 in his leg of the race. The team of Anthony Walker (Madison, WI/James Madison Memorial), Quinn, Amodio and Cristina took second in the event with a total time of 3:28.36.

    Amodio did take a first place finish in the 50-Yard Freestyle with a time of 22.30, beating out Distler by .99. He also won the 200-Yard Breaststroke (2:20.37) and the 200-Yard Individual Medley (2:07.51) on Saturday.

    Freshman Dan Thompson (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) swam a lifetime best in the 200-Yard Freestyle with a third place time of 1:56.77. Lai won the 100-Yard Breaststroke with a 1:05.49 and took second in the 200-Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:26.70.

    Solo diver John Nguyen won both diving events today with scores of 149.55 (1-Meter) and 133.20 (3-Meter). Nguyen even attempted a forward, one and a half summersault dive off the 3-Meter, which he had never tried before.

    The Brewers (2-1) will next travel to Union College for the Liberty League Championships on December 6 and 7. New Paltz (0-3) will travel to East Meadow, NY for the ECAC Winter Championships from Friday, December 6 through Sunday, December 8.
