Swimming And Diving To Host SUNY New Paltz Tomorrow

    POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 22, 2013) – The Vassar College men's and women's swimming and diving teams will host the cross-river rivals SUNY New Paltz on Saturday in its 2013-14 home meet opener.

What to Look For
Men – The Brewers (1-1) dropped a 155-112 decision to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute last Saturday. Senior diver John Nguyen (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) improved his personal best on the 1-Meter board with a score of 127.00 in six dives and took first place in the event.

The freshmen corps of Ian Quinn (Montclair, NJ/Seton Hall Preparatory School), Patrick Lai (Chatham, NJ/Newark Academy) and Dan Thompson (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) all had personal bests on the day. Quinn took second in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 59.66. Lai finished third in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a 1:05.30. Thompson swam a 1:58.54 in the 200 Yard Freestyle for a fourth place finish.

Women - The Brewers (1-1) are looking to rebound after a 164-127 loss to RPI last Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Brewers had to key performances in the pool and on the boards. Liberty League Rookie of the Week Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) snapped another Vassar College record. She broke the 10-year old 100-Yard Butterfly record that was held by Devon Chen '03. Chen's time was a 59.13 and Cunningham replaced the record with a time of 58.96.

Sophomores Maya Pruitt (New York, NY/Laguardia Music Art) and Alison Sagliocca (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) bested their personal performances on the diving boards last Saturday. Pruitt topped her 1-Meter, six dives score by 20 points with a tally of 198.6 and finished third in the event. Sagliocca's 3-Meter score took second and now stands as her best at 179.30.

A Look at the Hawks
Men – The Hawks (0-2) fell to SUNY Oswego 115-90 after battling the Lakers, neck-and-neck the whole meet up until the final two races. Oswego took first and third in the 100-Yard Breaststroke and took first in the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay by .14 seconds. Jack Spader won twice on the day in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle and the 500-Yard Freestyle with times of 10:33.11 and 5:04.27 respectively.

Women - The Hawks (2-0) are coming off a demanding 135-65 win over visiting SUNY Oswego. New Paltz had six swimmers take first place finishes. Cassidy Griger stood out as a dual-winner in the 50-Yard Freestyle and the 500-Yard Freestyle with times of 26.01 and 5:20.96 respectively.

Up Next
The Brewers will travel to Union College in Schenectady, NY for the Liberty League Championships. The two-day meet will begin on Friday, December 6 at 4:00 pm and will conclude on Saturday.

New Paltz will travel to East Meadow, NY for the ECAC Winter Championships from Friday, December 6 through Sunday, December 8.
