Cunningham Snaps 100 Fly Record; Women's Swimming and Diving Fall To RPI

    TROY, NY (November 16, 2013) – The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 164-127 Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Brewers showed continued improvement including one 10-year old school record being broken.

    Freshman Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) replaces Devon Chen '03 in the 100 Yard Butterfly Vassar College history books. Chen's record from 2003 in the race was a 59.16 but Cunningham swam to a first place, 58.96 in today's meet. Maryam Pourmaleki (Brandford, CT/Branford) followed Cunningham in the event with a fourth place finish (1:03.94).

    Cunningham, Zoe Fullerton (Los Angeles, CA/Palisades Charter) and Zoe Kurtz (Greenwood Village, CO/Milton Academy) took first (2:08.31), fourth (2:25.51) and fifth (2:50.98) finishes in the 200 Yard Butterfly, respectively.

    "We coaches are happy with the progress the team is making. We look forward to seeing what we can do in the training pool this week in preparation for New Paltz next weekend and Liberty League championships in early December," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee.

    Lily Frye (Fairport, NY/Harley School) won the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 26.66. The next two swimmers to finish both were within .11 seconds of Frye. Liz Balter (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) finished third in the event with a 26.77 and Leah Pan (Oakland Gardens, NY/Hunter College) took fourth with a 27.19.

    The other top individual performance in the lanes on Saturday was Milee Nelson (Champaign, IL/University Laboratory) in the 100 Yard Backstroke and the 500 Yard Freestyle. She swam an in-season best time of 1:04.77 in the 100 Back for a first place finish. Nelson also bested last week's time in the 500 by 11 seconds with a second place, 5:34.53 finish.

    The Brewers on the board continued to show steady improvement with two of them breaking personal bests. Maya Pruitt (New York, NY/Laguardia Music Art) topped her 1-Meter, six dives score by 20 points. Her new best sits at 198.6 points for a third place finish in the event. Alison Sagliocca (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) earned a personal best on the 3-Meter. She scored a 179.30 in six dives for a second place finish.

    The Brewers will next host SUNY New Paltz on Saturday, November 23 at 1:00 pm in Kresge Pool. RPI will next travel to Oneonta, NY to face Hartwick College at 1:00 pm tomorrow.
