Volleyball Goes 1-1 On The Afternoon In Liberty League Doubleheader

                  POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 5, 2013) – The Vassar College volleyball team dispatched of St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon in three games, but couldn't pick up the nightcap, falling to Union College in four sets in a Liberty League jamboree held in VC's Athletics and Fitness Center.

                  In the opening match of the day for the Brewers, Vasser knocked off St. Lawrence with scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-18. In the opening set, VC held the game's largest lead at 15-11 but SLU (14-6, 6-2 Liberty League) chipped away to pull to within one at 19-18. VC scored four of the next five points to earn the first set.

                  The second game witnessed the Brewers hit at a sensational .387, finishing 14 of their 31 attacks and erroring only twice. The final set was much like the second, as VC used a big run midway through the stanza to help it clinch the match victory.

                  Junior Taylor Mosley (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School) was electric against St. Lawrence, hitting .516 on the match after finishing 19 of her 31 attempts. For Mosley, it was 13th contest of the season with double-digit kills. Freshman Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had six kills and two aces, and Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) and Jessie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) each had five kills.

                  Sophomore libero Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) had 14 of the team's 44 digs against the Saints, and senior Rose Carman (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) added 37 assists. Vassar's ability to receive serve against St. Lawrence was huge, allowing the Saints only one ace all match and receiving serve at a .978 clip. Senior Megan Andersen (Santa Monica, CA/The Archer School) had a team-leading four aces to go with six digs.

                  In the second contest of the afternoon, VC jumped out quick 1-0 lead but couldn't maintain its edge, falling to Union College with scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-18, and 25-16. Vassar played great defense in the opening stanza, led by Hallum's 18 digs in the first period. Mosley led Vassar with nine kills in the opening period.

                  Union (13-7, 3-2 LL) rebounded after hitting .038 in the opening set to swing over .300 in each of the final three games to earn their third conference win. Mosley totaled 19 kills again in the second match of the day, digging up 15 UC attacks as well. Hallum totaled 31 digs, Carman added 48 assists and Miller posted 14 kills and eight digs.

                  Cardillo added nine kills and two assisted blocks, and Andersen had 12 digs as well for Vassar, which hit just .097 for the match. Rachel Wyman led Union offensively with 11 kills, while teammate Kelley White had 10 finishes.

                  Vassar (12-9, 4-4 LL) will return to conference play Wednesday afternoon as Bard College comes to town for a Liberty League match at 7 p.m. in Kenyon Hall.
