ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – The Vassar College women's volleyball team travelled to Bard College Friday evening for Liberty League action, knocking off Skidmore College in four games before taking a straight-set loss at the hands of conference-leading Clarkson University.
In the opening match, Vassar (11-8, 3-3 Liberty League) shook off a tough game in the second set to earn a four-set victory with scores of 25-18, 19-25, 25-14 and 25-16. The Brewers took control of the first game midway through the game, going on a 6-1 run to take an early one set edge.
After Skidmore (6-8, 0-2 LL) battled back by taking the second set, Vassar got some solid play from its hitters by swinging at a .391 clip in the third set to earn a 2-1 match advantage. Junior
Taylor Mosley (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School) ensured that the Brewers would be done in four, as she powered down eight kills in the fourth game to lift VC to the match win.
Mosley finished the contest with a match-leading 17 successful attacks, earning seven digs as well. Junior
Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) posted her sixth match of the season with double-digit kills, posting 11, to go with three assisted blocks.
Senior
Jessie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) also had eight kills and
Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucys Priory) chalked up six kills and four assisted rejections. Senior setting machine
Rose Carman (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) posted 43 helpers, while
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) dug up 21 Thoroughbred attacks. Freshman
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) was solid, adding seven kills, eight digs and three aces. The Brewers posted 13 services aces in the match, and hit at a very solid .241 percentage.
The second match of the night was tough sledding for the Brew, as Clarkson extended its season-long winning streak in the league to six with scores of 18, 19 and 14. Vassar hung around in both the first and second games, but late runs by the Golden Knights (15-4, 6-0 LL) lifted them to the set victories. The third set saw VC struggle offensively, hitting negative in dropping the deciding set.
Mosley again led the way for Vassar, as she finished with nine kills and five digs. Hallum had 15 digs in the second match of the evening, and Carman had 20 assists, two aces and four digs. Ditmore was very efficient, finishing seven of her 12 swings. Miller had three kills and seven digs, and
Aoife Feighery (Westborough, MA/Westborough) chalked up a service ace.
The big conference weekend continues Saturday for the Brewers, as they host another League crossover, entertaining four other teams. Tomorrow's slate sees VC battle St. Lawrence University at 2 p.m., and Union College at 4 p.m. in the final match of the day.
