Tapolsky Solid In Goal Despite 1-0 OT Loss To William Smith

Box Score

Game Program

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 4, 2013) – Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky (Louisville, KY/Dupont Manual) had an outstanding game for the Vassar College women's soccer team on Friday evening at Gordon Field, despite the 1-0 overtime loss to Liberty League #1 William Smith College.

The Heron offense was consistently pressuring the Brewer defense as William Smith outshot Vassar, 18-5, forcing Tapolsky to make remarkable save after remarkable save.

Tapolsky had eight saves on the day until Dineo Mmutla was granted a direct kick off a Vassar foul just 25 yards out from the net. Mmutla sent the ball high with it barely clearing bellow the crossbar and above the outstretched glove of Tapolsky. It was Mmutla's first goal of the year.

Tapolsky had solid help from the defense. In one instance, junior Sarah Bourenane (Carrollton, TX/Hebron) managed a defensive save from Heron's Madeline Buckley at 58:46.

Despite the statistical disadvantage Vassar had in shots, the Brewers had multiple shots that were close to finding the back of the net. At 19:32, junior Chloe Wheeler (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake) took a shot from 25 yards out that sailed just a foot high of the crossbar with plenty of room underneath.

Seconds later at 20:11, senior Gavriella Kaplan (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) took a shot from 15 yards out that went just as high as Wheeler's.

The Brewers finished with two of their five shots on goal and 13 fouls. 10 of William Smith's 18 shots were on goal as they recorded 11 fouls. The Herons had all nine of the corner kicks today.

The Brewers (4-5-1, 0-2-0 Liberty League) will next host Rochester Institute of Technology in Liberty League play tomorrow at 2:00 pm at Gordon Field. William Smith (8-1-0, 2-0-0 Liberty League) will next travel to Annadale-on-Hudson, NY to face Liberty League opponent Bard College tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
