Strong Serving Pushes New Paltz Past Women’s Volleyball Wednesday

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 30, 2013) – The visiting Hawks of New Paltz posted 12 service aces Wednesday in earning a three-set, non-conference win over the Vassar College women's volleyball team in action from Kenyon Hall. The Hawks won with scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-9.

Though the serving from the Hawks (28-5) was solid all evening, the Brewers struggled to pass off of the serve during the majority of the match. In the first set, VC held a 15-13 lead but a four-point stretch from New Paltz pushed the visitors to an opening set lead.

In the second and third sets, Vassar fell into a big hole early and couldn't rally as they dropped its seventh straight to New Paltz. The Brewers couldn't overcome the hot hitting as well from NP, as the Hawks accumulated 25 kills over the last two games, chalking up just four errors over that span.

Freshman Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) had a solid all-around game for the Brewers, as she had eight kills on 18 attacks, posting three aces and five digs. Junior Taylor Mosley (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School) finished with eight kills and four digs, while Jessie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) had five kills.

Junior Clara Cardillo (San Francisco, CA/Bay School of San Francisco) had four kills on seven attempts, and setter Rose Carman (Santa Cruz, CA/Santa Cruz) had 24 helpers and five digs. Sophomore libero Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) led Vassar with eight digs, as the Brewers hit at a .146 clip for the match (27-15-82).

New Paltz's Becca Borquist had a game-best 10 kills on the evening, while Alex Bizub added eight kills for the visitors. Katy Herbst had seven kills on nine attempts, and Marissa King had a match-leading 26 assists to go with two assisted blocks. New Paltz swung at a .346 percentage Wednesday, and faltered with the serve only three times.

The Brewers will finish their regular season this Saturday, November 2 with a tri-match against University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and UMass-Boston for Senior Day. Vassar's first match is at 1 p.m., battling Wisconsin-Oshkosh with the Senior Day festivities coming after that contest.
