POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 18, 2013) – The Vassar College men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to #10 St. Lawrence University Friday evening at Gordon Field during Liberty League action.
The Saints' Mark Provost would go on to score two goals in the game including the game-winner at 31:39 in the first half when Andrew Bednarsky sent a 20-yard cross pass from about 35 yards out towards the right of the 18. Provost received the well placed, leading pass and found the right corner of the senior Ryan Grimme (Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln) defended goal.
Provost's second goal was unassisted at 86:56 when he dribbled in front of a Brewer defender until he could find an opening to score against sophomore goalkeeper, Sebastien Lasseur (Cornwall, CT/Housatonic Vly Regional) for the 3-0 final score.
Daniel Hunt scored off a header when Morgan Smith sent him a 30-yard free kick at 81:35 for the 2-0 lead.
The Brewers' top chance of scoring while the game was still a 1-0 deficit was when junior Tom Wiechert (San Clemente, CA/San Clemente) broke through defenders for a one-on-one situation with Saints' goalie, Aaron Costello. Wiechert's shot went just barely by the right post after Costello dove in front of him in an attempt to break up Wiechert's drive, leaving the net wide open.
Grimme had three saves before being taken out of the game and replaced by Lasseur. Lasseur had one save. Costello had three saves in his shutout win for St. Lawrence.
The Brewers and Saints were tied in shots with 14 each. St. Lawrence had half of their shots on goal while Vassar only managed three.
St. Lawrence was penalized dearly with 20 fouls today compared to Vassar's nine. Vassar did earn two yellow cards to the Saints' one card.
Vassar held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Brewers (6-4-3, 1-1-2 Liberty League) will next host Clarkson University tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm. The Saints (10-1-2, 5-0-0 Liberty League) will next travel to Annandale-on-Hudson to face Bard College at 2:00 pm tomorrow as well.
