Box Score HOBOKEN, NJ – The Vassar College women's volleyball team rallied to tie the match at one set apiece, but the hosting Ducks of Stevens Tech would earn the final two games to take a non-conference 3-1 victory in action Wednesday evening.
Stevens (21-5) took the match with scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-14. The first set was fairly close throughout, though the Ducks extended their lead to four at 21-17 after an ace by Samantha Gates. Vassar (15-12) pulled to within one at 21-20 after a kill
from Taylor Mosley (Dallas, TX/Parish Episcopal School), but Stevens earned the next two points to lift it to the opening set win.
The visiting Brewers would knot the match at a game apiece, thanks to big 10-1 run midway through the set that turned an 11-7 deficit into a 17-12 advantage. Stevens inched back and tied the set at 22-all, but a kill by
Gabby Miller (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) on set point squared the match. Unfortunately for the Brewers, the host Ducks hit their stride on the attack, connecting on 32 kills over the last two sets with just four errors to earn the win.
Mosley led Vassar offensively with 15 kills on the evening, posting seven digs as well. Miller chalked up a double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs, adding four kills, and sophomore libero
Chloe Hallum (Olympia, WA/Olympia) had a team-best 23 digs. Junior
Marie Pitre (San Dimas, CA/St. Lucy Priory) added eight kills and three blocks for Vassar, who hit .154 (40-21-123) on the contest.
Mary Caulson paced all hitters with 15 kills for the Ducks, while Christina Sciarra tallied 14 kills as well. Kirsten Salmins finished with a game-high 24 digs for Stevens, which finished with 53 kills and just 16 errors all night.
Vassar returns to the court this weekend, jumping back into Liberty League action with road contest with Union College at 5 p.m. in Schenectady, NY at Rochester Institute of Technology Friday evening.
