POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 12, 2013) – Senior Tina Caso (Carmel, NY/Carmel) recorded yet another game-winning goal Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field during the Vassar College field hockey team's 3-1 Liberty League win over St. Lawrence University.
Senior Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) rocked a shot from the top right of the circle in the second half. Her shot would have gone wide left or possibly hit the post. Caso, while charging the goal, held her stick out perfectly for the redirect to the middle of the cage, just above the wood for the 2-1 lead at 43:32.
Caso got the Brewers on the board at 6:19 in the first half when junior Hilary McDonnell played a long pass from the right sideline to the front of the net. Caso received the pass and stuck it in the back left corner.
Kara Pelosi evened the score at 1-1 at 38:28 with a successful penalty stroke. The penalty was awarded after a pileup in front of the cage.
Sophomore Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) rounded out the Brewers' scoring and put the game out of the reach of the Saints at 62:15. Schroeder earned her second assist during the penalty corner. She received the insertion from Zarrella and then played it back. Zarrella fired a well-placed shot four her fourth goal of the year.
Senior Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N) got her seventh win of the season, having faced 12 shots with seven on goal. She recorded six saves with three of them coming from shots by Saints' Kate Higgins who totaled four shots on the day, leading St. Lawrence.
Nicole Matos earned the loss with only one save. She faced four shots on goal out of Vassar's 17 total shots, most of which were blocked by the Saints' defenders off of the penalty corners.
The Brewers had 10 penalty corners in the first half and totaled 13 on the day. St. Lawrence had four corners which all occurred in the first half. The Saints' defense did manage to shut down the Brewer offense besides the two goals in the second half, holding them to only three shots in the half.
The Brewers (8-4, 2-2 Liberty League) will take their four-game winning streak and host Union College in Liberty League action on Saturday, October 19 at 2:00 pm. The Saints (3-8, 1-3 Liberty League) will next host Morrisville State on October 15 at 4:00 pm as they look to snap their two-game losing streak.
