Title Defense: Women's Hoops Opens League Play Against Bard

The Brewers have won consecutive Liberty League titles.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 7, 2013) – The Vassar College women's basketball team will begin defense of its back-to-back Liberty League titles on Tuesday night, when the Brewers travel to Bard College for a 6:00 p.m. game.

Vassar Women's Notes: The Brewers (7-1) are coming off a split of their two games at the Montclair State University Holiday Tournament. In the opener, Vassar lost to Widener 67-65. The Brewers regrouped in the Third Place game to defeat Washington (Md.) College 66-53. For her efforts in averaging 21.0 ppg and 7.5 apg in the two games, junior guard Cydni Matsuoka was named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Matsuoka leads the Liberty League in scoring (20.4 ppg), field goal percentage (.566), assists (5.5 apg) and 3-point percentage (.490) and 3-pointers made per game (3.0).  In the January 3 NCAA Statistics, Matsuoka ranks 20th in the nation in scoring, 12th in assists, 19th in field goal percentage, 6th in 3-point shooting percentage and 15th in 3-pointers made per game.

Both junior Hannah Senftleber and sophomore Colleen O'Connell rank 10th in the leauge in rebounding (6.6 rpg).

Next Up: The Brewers will travel to the North Country to continue Liberty League play on Friday night against St. Lawrence at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday against Clarkson at 2:00 p.m..

Bard College Notes: The Raptors (6-5, 0-2) have already played two Liberty League contests. Last weekend, Bard lost to Skidmore (59-36) and Union (81-48) in a pair of away contests. The improved Bard team is led by Tytravia Riley, who leads the Raptors in scoring (18.5 ppg) and rebounding (16.2 rpg), which leads the league by more than five rebounds per game. Riley is also the league's second leading scorer. Bard also gets balanced scoring from four players, Victoria Fleisher, Blanka Bell, Liz Freud and Imani Jones, who all averag 7.5 ppg or better. 

Next Up: As Vassar's travel partner, Bard will play Clarkson on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and meet St. Lawrence on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Coaches: Vassar is coached by Candice Brown, who is in her 4th season. Brown has led the Brewers to back-to-back Liberty League Championships and appearances in the NCAA Division III Championships. She was the 2010-11 Liberty League Coach of the Year.

Bard is coached by Sarah Lombard, a 2008 SUNY Oswego graduate who is in her third season.
