Box Score

ROCHESTER, NY (January 25, 2013) – The Vassar College men's basketball team fell in an upset to Rochester Institute of Technology after a 14-5 run in the final five minutes of play gave the Tigers their first Liberty League victory of the 2012-13 season Friday evening.

The short-staffed Brewers at one point led the game by ten points, 45-35, but the combination of going 19-35 from the field and only having 26 rebounds compared to RIT's 42 rebounds, Vassar couldn't hold onto the otherwise, equal matchup. The score was tied seven times, resulting in eight lead changes.

The Brewers fall to 5-11 and 1-6 in the Liberty League. They will next travel to Hobart College tomorrow afternoon for a 4:00 pm game start. The Tigers advance to 5-11 and 1-6 in the Liberty League and will host Bard College tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm.

Junior guard Sam Rappaport hit 4-7 from beyond the 3-point arc for the 12-point, Brewer team-high score. RIT's Jameel Balenton had a game-high 18 points.

After a close, 31-28 first half, Vassar began to pull away from RIT with a 12-2 run started by sophomore guard Curtis Smith's jumper at 16:37. Junior forward Evan Carberry highlighted the run with a layup, plus the and-one and another layup. Freshman guard Erikson Wasyl added a 3-pointer and junior forward John Donnelly put in a layup towards the run that put the Brewers up 45-35 with 13:11 remaining.

RIT closed the gap and reclaimed the lead with a 27-8 run in the final 12 minutes of play. Out of those 27 points, 11 of them were the result of free throws. RIT shot 73.7 percent from the line going 14-19 throughout the night.
