Women's Basketball to Host RPI In Liberty League Home Opener

Liberty League games mean one thing: intensity and competition.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 10, 2013) – The Vassar College women's basketball team begins a three-game Liberty League homestand, starting on Tuesday, January 15 with a home contest at the Athletics & Fitness Center against Rensselaer Institute of Technology at 6:00 p.m.

Vassar Women's Notes (9-2, 2-1): The Brewers are coming off a split of their last two Liberty League games, falling to St. Lawrence 81-60 and defeating Clarkson 63-36. Both games were marked by dramatic runs. On Friday night, St. Lawrence used a strong 11-0 second half run in a three-minute span to pull away from the Brewers in an eagerly anticipated rematch of last year's Liberty League Championship game. Against Clarkson, Vassar went on a 20-5 run over the final 6:52 of the first half to take a 19 point intermission lead. The Brewers cruised from that point. The guard play of junior Cydni Matsuoka and Nyah Berg contributed all of the 20 points during the run. 

Super Cydni: Junior guard Cydni Matsuoka leads the Liberty League in scoring (20.4 ppg), field goal percentage (.566), assists (5.5 apg) and 3-point percentage (.490) and 3-pointers made per game (3.0).  In the January 10 NCAA Statistics, Matsuoka ranks 43rd in the nation in scoring, 8th in assists, 23rd in field goal percentage, 11th in 3-point shooting percentage and 22nd in assist to turnover radio.

Both junior Hannah Senftleber and O'Connell rank 10th in the leauge in rebounding (6.6 rpg).

Inside the Numbers:
  • The Brewers are 7-0 when leading at the half, 1-0 when down, 1-0 when tied and 0-2 when behind. 
  • Vassar has outrebounded its opponents in nine of 11 games and are 8-1 in those games.
  • Vassar has committed less turnovers than its opponent in nine of 11 games.
  • The Brewers have taken 10 or more 3-pointers in seven of 11 games.
  • Vassar has won seven of its nine games by ten or more points.
  • The Brewers went a perfect 14 of 14 from the free throw line agaisnt Wesleyan.
  • The Brewers have been able to play the entire team twice this season, against Berkeley and Clarkson.

Next Up: The Brewers will host Skidmore at the AFC on Friday, January 18 at 6:00 p.m.

Rensselear Notes (9-4, 3-1):  The Engineers are on a three-game winning streak, having defeated Rochester Institute of Technolgoy 74-70 and Union 66-63 last weekend. 

Against RIT, graduate student Sarah Wetmore scored 19 points to pace the Engineers to a come-from-behind victory, 74-70. 

Against Union, Wetmore made a three-point basket at the buzzer to break a tie and cap a 66-63 come-from-behind win. Wetmore's game-winning basket gave the Engineers their only lead of the game as they trailed 3-0 to start the game and by as many as nine points with only 3:38 left in the second half. Wetmore scored 20 of her game-high 22 points in the second half. 

Next Up: After tonight's game, RPI will have a week off before hosting Bard College on January 22 at 6:00 p.m.

Coaches: Vassar is coached by Candice Brown, who is in her 4th season. Brown has led the Brewers to back-to-back Liberty League Championships and appearances in the NCAA Division III Championships. She was the 2010-11 Liberty League Coach of the Year.

RPI is coached by John Greene in his 10th season.
