Catholic University Deals Men's Soccer First Loss, 2-1

Box Score

GLASSBORO, NJ (September 7, 2012) – The Vassar College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to Catholic University 2-1 on Friday night at the Rowan Invitational.

The Brewers are now 3-1 on the season and Catholic advances to a 2-1 record. The loss means that the Brewers will now face John Jay College in the consolation game at 2:00 pm while Catholic will face Rowan University in the championship game at 4:30 pm. The games were originally scheduled to be later in the day but were moved up due to thunderstorm predictions.

Catholic's Mike Brennan scored the first goal in the 17th minute off a Kevin Romano assist. The score remained at 1-0 in favor of Catholic until the last 10 minutes of play in the second half when Ian Smith scored Catholic's second goal from a Paul Lewis pass in the 82nd minute.

Vassar responded three minutes later with a scrambling shot in front of the net by freshman Gavin Jennings. After receiving a short pass from junior Adrien Demelier, Jennings managed to find the lower right corner of the goal for a much needed, but too late goal as time expired leaving the score in favor of Catholic 2-1.

Gary Claus had seven saves facing 14 shots while Catholic's Torsten Meuschke had three saves on Vassar's seven shots.

Dante Varotsis and Zander Mrlik were the only two Brewers who got two shots on the day.
