POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 29, 2012) –
Chloe Wheeler's header lifted the Vassar College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory against Clarkson University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field for their second straight Liberty League win.
The game stayed level and physical on both ends in what seemed like a game that would hit overtime. Vassar controlled the offensive side of the game with spending the majority of game time on Clarkson's side of the field.
The Brewers, now 7-3 (2-1 Liberty League), will next face Bard College at home on Wednesday, October 3 at 4:00 pm. The Golden Knights of Clarkson, now 4-3-2 (0-2-1 Liberty League), will face SUNY Potsdam at home on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 pm.
Coming off a dramatic win over St. Lawrence just a day earlier, the Brewers kept up the momentum with consistent play and focused defense. Vassar dominated possession throughout the first half, but could not find the breakthrough the team needed despite creating several good chances.
The game remained scoreless until the 69th minute, when
Sarah Bourenane curled a free kick into the box from 40 yards out, where sophomore forward
Chloe Wheeler headed the ball into the right side of the net to put the Brewers up 1-0. The goal was Wheeler's seventh of the season.
The Brewers kept up the offensive pressure throughout the game, out-shooting Clarkson 12-2 in the second half. However, the one goal proved enough, and Vassar took the victory.
Senior goalkeeper
Ali Higgins had three saves in the win for the Brewers, while Clarkson goalkeeper Kim Kenline had six saves in the loss for the Golden Knights.
