THROGGS NECK, NY (September 16, 2012) – The Vassar College men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to SUNY Maritime College Sunday evening. This was the first overtime game for the Brewers this season.
The setback drops Vassar to 5-3 on the season. The Brewers will next host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday, September 22 at 2:00 pm at Gordon Field in their first Liberty League contest of the season. The win improves Maritime to 4-3 . Next Saturday, Maritime will travel to Patchogue, NY for their Skyline Conference opener versus Saint Joseph's-Long Island.
Vassar got the ball rolling just over six and a half minutes into the game when sophomore
Tom Wiechert passed a low ball from the right side of the box into the middle where junior
Rob Manukyan was waiting to tip it in for the game's first goal. The first half would remain in favor of Vassar 1-0.
Maritime tied the game in the 62nd minute of play when Taylor McFadzen accepted a pass from Logan Becker and forced senior goalkeeper
Gary Clauss to come out of net. McFadzen lobbed the ball over Clauss for the goal. Maritime then took the lead in the 79th minute off a solo Ryan Nugent goal from a rebounded shot off a Vassar player. The shot came from about 10 yards out.
With 30 seconds remaining in the game, sophomore
Justin Mitchell was awarded an indirect kick which he sent to junior
Juliano Pereira who then headed the ball in to tie the game 2-2 and send it into overtime.
Maritime got the game-winning goal just 1:50 into the overtime period off a corner from Nugent to David Hraska and then to Chris Anderson for the win.
Clauss had six saves on the day while Maritime's Michael Vanadia had two. Maritime placed 11 shots against Vassar, while the Brewers managed nine.
