Box Score BANGOR, ME (September 1, 2012) – The Vassar College women's soccer team won their first game of the season with a 2-1 victory over Husson University during Husson's 8
th Annual Classic Saturday afternoon.
The win for Vassar sets their season off right with a 1-0 start while Husson will continue their season with a 0-1 mark. This is head coach Laura Williamson's first win since taking the helm of the Brewers.
“It's always nice to walk away from the first match of the season with a victory,” Williamson said. “Yes, we got the win but what I'm most excited about is that we got the “W” playing the way we want to play. The players knew the game plan and they executed it. It's still early and we have a lot to work on but today gave us a great foundation to build upon.”
Sarah Bourenane opened up the 2012 campaign with an 18-yard blast past the keeper to the bottom right corner making the score 1-0. Husson responded in the second half with about 20 minutes left in regulation when Miranda Drinkwater took a shot from 12 yards out towards the left post. The shot deflected off the post to Emily Zurcher who placed it to the back post for the goal.
Chloe Wheeler notched the game-winner for the Brewers from a distance of 18 yards to beat the goalie and win the game.
Vassar had a total of 10 shots. Six of those were from Wheeler. Husson only managed to put four shots against Vassar with two of them being on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Ali Higgins had one save for Vassar while Husson's Jessica Poulin had four saves.
Vassar moves on in the classic to play Maritime College tomorrow at 11:00 am while Husson faces Western New England.
