POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (August 31, 2012) – The Vassar College men's soccer team opened up the 2012 season with a 3-1 victory over SUNY New Paltz Friday evening at Gordon Field. Vassar's first goal of the season came from a penalty kick.
Justin Mitchell became the first Brewer of 2012 to score a goal when he faked Andres Montoya on a penalty kick. Mitchell ran up to the ball only to halt which made Montoya dive right. Mitchell then placed the ball into the bottom left corner with little effort to take the lead. The goal would lead to Vassar's 1-0 season start as New Paltz starts off 0-1.
Vassar's second goal came from during the second half when 
Jake Rabin fielded and passed the ball towards the net from 30 yards out to waiting freshman 
Jordan Palmer. Palmer headed the ball into the top left area of the goal for his first collegiate goal.
The Brewers finished out their scoring in the 71
st minute of play when 
Rob Manukyan accepted a cross pass from 
Casey Rice near the middle of the box. Manukyan pounded the ball into the lower corner to making it a 3-0 game.
New Paltz's Mike Jacobsen got the Hawks on the board with a placed ball into the lower right corner of the 
Ryan Grimme-defended goal off a pass from Dondre Irving.
Vassar led new Paltz in shots (27-18), shots on goal (13-6) and corner kicks (9-3). Grimme ended the game with five saves while New Paltz's Montoya had 10.
Vassar next hosts Mount Saint Mary's College on Monday at 4:00 pm. New Paltz hosts Skidmore College on September 4 at 4:00 pm.
