Women's Swimming and Diving Secure Ten First Place Wins Against Skidmore

Jane Cardona swept the diving events, breaking her personal records by almost 20 points.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 3, 2012) – The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team won ten events in their first home dual meet of the season with a commanding 175-125 win over Skidmore College Saturday at Kresge Pool.

Senior co-captain Shannon Sara won three of her four events with first place finishes in the 200 yard freestyle (2:01.67), 200 yard individual medley (2:17.61) and teamed with Maryam Pourmaleki, Lilliana Frye and Millee Nelson in the 200 yard medley relay (1:57.62).

Sara also took second in the 100 yard freestyle (57.45).

Vassar will next host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on November 10 at 1:00 pm. Skidmore will next host Oneonta State on November 9 at 1:00 pm at the Williamson Sports Center Pool.

“It was a fun, solid and competitive first home meet and we can see improvement from last weekend,” head coach Lisl Prater-Lee said. “Our spirits were high and we backed it up throughout the meet.”

Juliana Struve won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:15.58) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:43.24). Struve also teamed with Anna Kuo, Zoe Fullerton and Marie Schmidt for a second place finish in the 200 medley relay (2:03.22). The 200 medley relay gave Vassar a 13-point advantage going into the 1,000 yard freestyle.

Olivia Harries and Schmidt teamed up for a first place (Harries, 11:19.07) and third place (Schmidt, 11:28.19) in the 1,000 yard freestyle with their season-best times.

Jane Cardona swept the diving events with a pair of first place wins scoring 200.32 on the one-meter board and 220.95 on the three-meter.

Senior co-captain Sydnie Alquist won the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.01 and had two third place finishes in the 200 free (2:04.78) and 50 free (27.09). Fullerton and Robin Lam finished the sweep of the 100 fly with Fullerton in second (1:05.38) and Lam in third (1:06.17) for seven more points.

Pourmaleki won the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:22.94.
