POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 10, 2012) – Led by the efforts of senior Shannon Sara, who had four first places finishes, the Vassar College women's swim-dive team lost in a competitive meet against a strong Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute team, 178-121 on Saturday afternoon at Kresge Pool.

Sara had a complete meet as a member of the 200 Medley Relay winning team (1:57.08) and capturing the 200 Free (2:02.26), the 200 Breast (2:234.84) and the 200 IM (2:19.20).

The Brewers are now 2-2 on the season. RPI improves to 2-1. Vassar travels to SUNY New Paltz next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. meet. RPI next hosts Hartwick on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Behind a scintillating swim by Sara and freshmen Milee Nelson, Maryam Pourmaleki and Liliana Frye, the Brewers captured the opening 200 Yard Medley Relay event in a close race.

“We got out to a fast start and had a lot of momentum right from the start,” said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. “But RPI swam well where they needed to and swam to their talent.”

Sara enabled Vassar to pick up meaningful points and build team confidence throughout the meet. “Shannon raced well today and that was her mindset going into the meet,” said Prater-Lee. “She was going to give everything she had.”

The Same could be said for Nelson, who won the 100 Back (1:04.90) and senior Sydnie Alquist who placed second in the 100 Freestyle (57.70) and third in the 200 Free (2:05.71).

Freshman Anna Kuo posted season bests in her three events, the 100 Breaststroke (1:17.53),  200 Breaststroke (2:26.23) and 200 IM (2:27.64).

“A bunch of our swimmers stepped up today and are starting to come together as a team,” said Prater-Lee.
